I'm almost afraid to ask. This is my first time posting, I've lurked here and there, DH was diagnosed ADHD a couple of months ago, we go back to the Dr. next week to discuss treatment. I will be insisting on medication, and filling it 2 seconds after the appointment. If I don't see some change in him, I'm done, I can't do this anymore. Counseling won't work for him, he'll just tell the councilor to go F him/herself. So, my hopes are all on the medications. What are your experiences with them? Good and bad.
Thanks, Jeana
Will Medication Work?

The research statistics are this:
Medications make significant improvements in ADHD partners 65-90% of the time HOWEVER, to be most effective, the dose must be gotten right AND the partner needs to apply the improved focus and other medication benefits to making behavioral changes (i.e. participating in behavioral therapy of some sort, such as coaching). I strongly urge you to download my FREE chapter on the effective treatment of adult ADHD and snoop around my online treatment guide. You, too, can impact how well your partner's treatment goes - see 'leg 3' of treatment in the download.
I can't emphasize this enough - getting an ADHD med that works takes experimentation with both the specific med used as well as the does. This takes time. If the first medication doesn't work or doesn't agree with him, this DOES NOT mean that meds can't work - only that this one does not. To give you an example - my husband took a stimulant medication for exactly ONE DAY and said 'never again!' He then found something that works very well for him.
Good luck!
My H has a new doctor ....

For the longest time, H was relying on our family doctor for meds. H never discussed ADHD with that doctor, nor his alcoholism. That doctor was solely prescribing based on some story H was telling him about stressful job situation and stressful marriage.
His new doctor (a psychiatrist) knows that H is an alcoholic and has ADHD (but not the PDs) The doc wants H to do more than just pop a pill, which is H's mode.
I hope he gets prescribed some appropriate meds.
Meds are a must have

ADHD is not something you can think your way out of or muscle through. If he tries he will most likely fail and if he does some how succeed it will be the hard way.
Please read my post in this forum "I Have ADHD" and then you might want to have him read it as well.
He has nothing to gain and everything to lose by ignoring it.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
BIGREDDOG, you pretty much nailed it, the sad thing is we have a baby, so the ADHD symptoms pretty much tripled. I did not know about the ADHD before we had the baby, I knew there was something going on, I actually thought it was PTSD. Anyway, our family Dr. has referred him to an ADHD specialist psychiatrist, she didn't want to medicate him at the appointment, so we've both been waiting patiently for the new Dr. to call. If it doesn't work, then I will have no choice but to leave, for the sake of our daughter. I will not allow her to be abused, I don't allow him to abuse me, he does try, but that is where I draw the line, I am a strong women, my daughter will be too if it kills me.
