This past Sunday, The New York Times ran an opinion piece by L. Alan Sroufe called Ritalin Gone Wrong. Dr. Hallowell weighed in to counter the tactics and assumptions, stating “the piece pushed emotional hot-buttons in a way that would scare the daylights out of uninformed readers...” Dr. Hallowell offers a much different point of view, one based on his strength-based, whole-person approach to treating ADHD. He believes that medication is one tool that can help, but always as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. I can't tell you what a relief it was to read your response. Dr. Sroufe's opinion piece left me so depressed and anxious. I just wanted to scream at him. I actually sent him a (polite) email with questions about his "theories" that I found absolutely ridiculous, to which he responded dismissively.
Knowing people will take his article seriously is really frightening to me. It's enough to worry about the shortages of medication caused by the overprescribing of them, but this kind of thing could eliminate them altogether.
Hopefully YOUR article will reach the right people.
